Wordsworth W. Wordsworth (also known as Saturne in Les Entrechats), usually referred to as Wordsworth, is one of the members of the Catillac Cats and is known for speaking in rhyme in almost every episode he appears in.

Character Overview[]

Personality[]

Wordsworth's life is dominated by two loves: poetry and music. He speaks almost exclusively in rhyme: from very short couplets ("Way to go, Mungo!") to long, elaborate sentences, which are especially common in the second series. Such is his obsession with speaking in this way that, in the second-series "scene-setting" episode Christmas Memories, Riff-Raff calls him "Rhymin' Simon" before he finds out his actual name. Meanwhile he is frequently distracted by music, which he listens to on a personal stereo. In Big Foot, for example, he ends up dancing on a giant monster's foot, oblivious to its presence, as his friends watch in horror; and in Debutante Ball he is so exhausted from listening to the "3,000 Greatest Hits of Rock 'n' Roll" on the radio that he sleeps through a chaotic party. Christmas Memories reveals that he initially played his music out loud on a radio; at Riff-Raff's request, Cleo gave him a personal stereo from her music store. Although he enjoys singing he is very bad at it, as seen for example in Cruisin' for a Bruisin'.

As well as being an amateur poet and music-lover, he is often seen tinkering with things in the junkyard. He maintains and improves Leroy's dirt-bike at the start of Cat's Angels, for example; and in Search for a Star he invents a "Stiltmobile" which – after a false start when he forgets to connect the brakes – helps to get Cleo back from the man who has "catnapped" her. He is also good at providing tips and advice to the others, and acts as a voice of reason to Riff-Raff, Hector and, on the occasions when they interact, Heathcliff. He is more of a follower than a leader, and sometimes regrets leaving the decision-making to others ("I wish I knew why I listened to you!", he complains to Hector on at least two occasions when they suffer mishaps). In Kitten Around, his disgust and uncharacteristic anger at Riff-Raff cheating on Cleo indicates he has high moral standards.

Wordsworth is slow to anger, easy to please, and much more contented than Riff-Raff and Hector. He is perfectly happy to laze around listening, singing and dancing to his music, and rarely complains about being ordered around by Riff-Raff or Hector and getting involved in the grunt-work of their plans. Although he will usually make a smart remark about it – rhyming, of course – he simply tends to do as he is told. His laid-back and easygoing nature is seen, for example, at the start of Young Cat with a Horn, when a shortage of fish – and Hector's feeble attempt to get some – angers Riff-Raff and Mungo: Wordsworth simply takes in his stride. Even when Hector's stupidity nearly kills him in Junkyard Flood, Wordsworth is amazingly chilled out: gently teasing Hector rather than calling out his behaviour. He often enjoys joking around and acting the fool: for example, dancing around on a dog's back in Kitty Kat Kennels, clapping Riff-Raff when he says "I need a hand" in Carnival Capers, and constantly making witty comments.

Although quick-witted and intelligent in some ways, he can be naïve and gullible. In Hector Spector, Hector exploited this for his own amusement, but even he was surprised at how easily Wordsworth was taken in; and only the combined efforts of the rest of the gang helped him realise he was being set up. When afraid he can also be overdramatic, occasionally crying theatrically – as in Carnival Capers, Hector Spector and Lucky's Unlucky Day. In that episode, and in For the Birds, he even jumps into Riff-Raff's arms in fear; and he does the same with Mungo in Pecos' Treasure. Similarly, on seeing the monster in Big Foot he faints clean away. He is quite similar to Mungo in his fearfulness and timidity, in contrast to Heathcliff and Riff-Raff's bravery and willingness to fight – although Wordsworth does get stuck in like the rest of the gang when he has to fight off rival alley cats or other foes.

Although normally laid-back, Wordsworth can at times be excitable; and his flamboyant gestures and body language come across as quite effeminate and camp – another contrast to the macho "alpha male" personalities of Heathcliff, Riff-Raff and Hector. A good example is his extravagant finger-wagging and flouncing off after Mungo calls him a "has-been" in The Mungo Mash.

In several episodes the gang are seen playing musical instruments; Wordsworth usually plays the drums. In A Camping We Will Go he also plays a harp, presumably built out of things found in the forest.

Appearance[]

Wordsworth is of medium height (similar to Hector) and slim. He has light grey fur with prominent tufts on the chest, and a pink nose and ears. He is almost never seen without three accessories: a black headset with yellow headphones, a pair of black sunglasses with a dark blue tint, and light blue and yellow roller skates. He rarely wears the sunglasses: instead, they stay perched on his head. The roller skates come off only in special circumstances: notably when the gang visit the beach in Beach Blanket Mungo, and in Monstro vs. the Wolf Hound, when Riff-Raff's dream depicts Wordsworth as a misshapen, hunchbacked lab assistant.

Wordsworth speaks in a stereotypically hip, "cool dude" fashion, with a fairly high-pitched, rhythmic, sing-song voice which gets even higher when he is excited.

Relations[]

Relationship(s)[]

Roxie[]

He said that Roxie was sweet and neat and has a good beat right down to her beautiful feet.

In the episode The Other Woman, there was a cat was dropped off from a bus that he and the other Catillac Cats minus Cleo and Riff-Raff opened their mouths in amazement when they saw her.

In the episode The Big Break In, he, Hector and Mungo tried to impress 12 house cats.

In the episode Repo Cat, three cats that were female counterparts to him, Hector flirted with them though Wordsworth and Mungo had to get him to resist.

Heathcliff[]

Like his close friends Hector and Mungo, he usually fights with Heathcliff, but they're still friends with him, he does care for Heathcliff as Heathcliff does for them as shown in episodes such as The Siamese Twins and Heathcliff Surprise!. Even so, in the episode Heathcliff Reforms, he did not share fish with Heathcliff (possibly because Heathcliff would not share himself) and took advantage of him along with Hector and Mungo, and in the episode Raiders of the Lost Cat, he and Hector were happy to see Heathcliff get stolen after he Hector and Mungo came to Sonja's party uninvited saying "Trap him in a box and throw away the locks." In the episode Used Pets he said "Friends to the end" to Heathcliff and Mungo replied saying "I thought we weren't supposed to like Heathcliff", but in later episodes they hang out with Heathcliff thus proving they're all friends in spite of disputes.

Sonja[]

Enemies[]

Leroy[]

Like the rest of the Catillac Cats, he fights a lot with Leroy. But sometimes, he would join forces with him when facing another antagonist like in the episode Soccer Anyone?. And he would come to aid when needed as shown in the episode Leroy's in Love.

Trivia[]

  • Wordsworth is named after the 19th century poet William Wordsworth.
  • He is the only one to not have an episode titled after him or about him.
  • Wordsworth was not present in a comic appearance with the other members of the Catillac Cats on July 20th, 2016 for some unknown reason, but he has made one cameo in the Heathcliff Comics on February 20th, 2018 with the rest of the gang. He isn't seen with his roller skates though, probably because Peter Gallagher forgot or thought it was easier to draw without them. His fur is white instead of light gray.
  • Wordsworth's full name was revealed in the episode The Big Swipe.

Wordsworth's rhymes[]

The Great Pussini

Except when you vocalize, everybody cries!
Hey hey hey, watch what you say, Heathcliff sings good far far away!

Kitty Kat Kennels

Now I'm lying in the dirt, and think my body's hurt.
Lots of things I do for fun, but getting squashed by pipes ain't one.

Ain't no way in this kind of place you'll find a cat with this kind of face.
I know he was here, but he disappeared.
Yeah, a cat's gotta be free on the streets, not locked up like some kind of creep...
Should've got a mole to dig this hole...
I'd be at home taking a nap, not standing in the dirt holding a map.
I have my doubts about being out...
Just my luck, I think I'm stuck...
My head is so full of pain, I hope I didn't break my brain.
Nice throw, Mungo!

Riding like this, I'll never fall, unless we hit a great big wall!

Carnival Capers

Like olé, okay?
Look out son, 'cause here I come!

We're leaving or we're grieving!
Throw a sinker at the stinker!
Step this way, win a pal for your gal!
A coupe for you cute-ay.
And he wins a baby for his lady.
Ten out of ten, Riff-Raff strikes again...

Let's take a twirl on the tilt-o-whirl!

Circus Beserkus

We've had some fun in the sun, now our day is done.
Like that car was our home, now we're all alone...

There's no room, you big baboon!
Yeah, that big guy is starting to get on my...
Don't sweat it, my man, we've got the plan!
Now we play it cool and we wait for that fool.

Hop on in and we'll take a spin!

The Farming Life Ain't For Me

The sailboat sunk, why not the trunk?
Oh no, Mungo!

Wishful Thinking

Oh, what's the use? We're almost out of moo juice.
I found this bottle in the yard, a gift with my regard.
I don't think it's trash that's making the dash.

Cat Can Do

No sweat, Chet.
Want my coat, goat?

Much Ado about Bedding

Hey Hector, what's happening here? Our car radio's a pain in the ear.
I got an idea. Let's get out of here-ah!

Way to go, Mungo!

Hey, we're gaining ground on the hound.

House of the Future

Hey Riff-Raff, you're looking pretty dapper, man. What's the plan?
Great plan, Hector my man.

Boy, you can really feed your face in this place.
What a rude dude!

We gotta lure the boom on that big vaccum!

For the Birds

You're right as the night, dude.
Once upon a time, that was mine.

I may be amiss, but do you hear a hiss?

No birds about, so let's clear out.

Swamp Fever

Now that's the craziest thing I ever heard, you big nerd.
Hey man, what's the plan?

I'm not sick, what's the trick?
I don't think you should, I feel real good.
Hey, this kid's flipped his lid.
Let's find one of these gators, so I can catch you guys later.
Row, you guys. If you think you're wise.
Look guys, I feel okay. Let's split, what do you say?
Say what you may, this is the end of my day.

Let's say later to the gator.

Monstro vs. the Wolf Hound

They sh-should've c-called this movie "Hairy meets Scary".
Welcome to Monstro Castle. Now what's the hassle?

Who's the slick chick?
You're pretty and I'm witty. How about we go dancing in the city?
Please come in and we'll begin.
Walk this way please. He's in the dungeon deep freeze.
You are the master, but my way is faster.
He's really nice when he's on ice.

I know, you're here about Monstro.
