High Flying Fools is the fourth part of the thirteenth episode of the series Heathcliff and Dingbat. This is based on Dingbat, rather than Heathcliff. The season/series ended and is followed by the Heathcliff and Marmaduke.
Synopsis
The Creeps unwillingly foil the plan of stolen diamonds' smugglers while trying to work as air lines personnel.
Plot
The episode begins at the airport. Creeps are awaiting in front of a ghastly-looking semi-gothic building for their passengers when a 1940s sedan with two suspicious-looking passengers approaches them. The shorter passenger states, that they have to get stolen diamonds to the Okie-Penokie swamp, where their contact awaits. The two men are apparently diamond thieves. The sight of the Creeps scares the men off, yet they allow to check-in their baggage. When Dingbat opens the car trunk, he spots a briefcase labelled "Stolen diamonds." He has trouble with lifting the briefcase, therefore Sparerib has to shake the entire car with passengers to have the briefcase removed. Nobody tells Spareib to put the car down. Sparerib hurls the car away, then the container with diamonds lands safely on Dingbat and Nobody, pressing them in the process. When they return to normal shapes, Sparerib morphs on Nobody's order into a trolley cart, so the Creeps can take the cargo to the airport.
Creeps' customers receive from the Trans-Transylvianian Airlines an old-fashioned propeller aircraft, called "The Creep Craft", to have them and the diamonds transported. Dingbat moves it from the hangar. Despite the taller thief states that he has never seen a plane like that before, the men board on the plane with their ghoulish hosts. The shorter thief urges the Creeps to board in, he wants to have the plane lift off at five o'clock. Sparerib sets the propeller. When the plane reaches the skies, Sparerib makes sure the passengers fasten their creep seatbelts, much to the passengers' dismay. Sparerib adjusts the seats in such way they provide less comfort than they did. The aircraft tends to lose stability in flight, which disturbs the crew and the passengers. It turns out that Nobody cannot hold the plane's course properly for he has no hands and remains focused on finding the Okie Penokie Swamp on map. Since the passengers require service, Dingbat places an Automatic Monster Pilot to replace Nobody - basically a horned humanoid anchored to a small coffin, who is wearing a pilot cap. The new aviator performs minimally better than Nobody.
Dingbat attempts to provide the passengers a meal on board. He dresses himself for the role. The onboard catering turns out to be problematic, for the current aviator fails to keep the proper course. The plane rolls a barrel in the air, therefore the meal and beverage hit the ceiling. When the aircraft returns to normal position, the meal lands on floor, causing a mess. Dingbat clears the mess with his straw. After Nobody finished grumbling, the shorter criminal attempts to examine the map with his companion and Sparerib. It turns out that the plane is going to the opposite direction to the swamp. Sparerib attempts to help them by simply reverting the map in the air, which does not help at all. The plane soon loses stability once again and everyone on board feels those. At one moment, Sparerib elects to throw the suitcase with stolen diamonds outside the plane, which infuriates the passengers.
Dingbat's attempt to scare the thieves with his vampiric nature fails, thus the Creeps have to flee outside the plane. The make it to the upper wing, where the taller thief grabs Dingbat, but doesn't hold him for long when the vampiric canine polymorphs into a bat and flies away to reunite with companions. Sparerib develops a plan, how to escape the criminals - first, he saws off the part of the wing the Creeps are occupying, then he changes himself into a parachute. A ghost summoned from Nobody works as a parachute canopy. The Automatic Monster Pilot escapes using his own parachute, when the plane rolls a barrel downwards. The criminals somehow land safely in the swamp, where a Police boat intercepts them.
The Creeps's plan worked well, except that Dingbat spots alligators nearby, who seem quite hungry. The ghoulish crew has to flee past the swamp, chased by the local reptile population.
